GRAVEL GRINDING

LT 100 - READY OR NOT
With 120 days before the start of the Leadville Trail 100 ( really 104) Mt Bike Race I thought - man, there's still 4 month before the big race. My good friend and many time leadville participant, Mike Johnson has one of those countdown things to Leadville on his blog and when we broke 100 days I thought maybe it is time to dig out the Mt Bike for the season. Last week when the damn thing said less than 90 days - we said it was time to get serious about Leadville training. So Mike put out the word that the adaptation was going to begin this week end.
GETTING CAFFEINATED AT CUP OF JOES
Four Bike Tech Racers - Kathleen Porter (first time Leadviller and my fine training partner), Pete Berendzen, Mike Johnson and I answered the call.We headed west out of Cedar Falls with a goal of riding 4 to 5 hours and earning some Dirty Cup points. The weather was fantastic, the riding was great and the convenient stores were aah convenient.
While we were riding several things occurred to me.
1. There's a reason why we like to ride our X Bikes.
2. How is this gravel grinding going to help with our preparation for the Memorial Day Races.
3. No matter what kind of training/racing you've done you are never really prepared for leadville - except, maybe in Dec and Jan.
4. But what really occurred to me is that there is no better way to spend a Saturday morning than riding a lot of gravel with your friends on your 62 birthday.
We met our goals and immediately started making plans for for the Memorial Day Races.

TT from the Turn Around and Hill Repeats
If you have ever wondered what goes on at the turn around you need wonder no more. I admit I had never gone down to the end of the 5 miles so my assistant and I jumped in the car with Elaine to find out.

on the lovely hill by Look Out Park.

I just happened to have a topo map of Cedar Falls. Don't you too?
They start between the "A" and the "R" in park and end up by the "D" in Disposal. This topo map isn't the most currant, (remants of a disposal or something is still there) but the elevations are still the same as far as I know. You can count the lines and do the math to figure out the feet in climbing.
Do I sound like Phil here?
Nice tuck position.
Get out and take some pictures.

Seven Oaks Mud fest
Chris & I did really well. There were 12 folks that towed the line. Check out the write up here for more details.....
Chris finished 3rd with 7 laps
Mike J finished 2nd with 15 laps.
I had a ton of fun despite the fact I had thrown in the towel while it was raining. Once I got going the course just took some time to get into shape. Lots of little climbs, I recommend riding here when the weather is good.

Spring TT #3
A nice typical windy Spring TT for Kat and teammates Karen from IA Cty and Carey representing the BTR Women for the event. The close to 20+mph cross-wind from the north with a hint of east influence made for a fast ride out and a bit more effort back. Not a big turn out but nice to see Tom K , Jeff K, Kevin, Ralph, Capt. Bob, Craig, Carey, Chris H? and some others I missed. The "marked" man was there as well and didn't disappoint - Way to go Mike - fastest time of the night... again.

Loyal BTR supporters and official photographer - Kim and Elizabeth (EJ who had a 4:55 1 mile tt ride for the night - great job!!)

The results announcements by Mr. Dave Burman (thanks for helping). BTR jerseys abound - Carey, Karen, Craig, Captain Bob, Kat and Mike's aero helmet .
The women of the BTR team - way to represent ladies!
Heading back into town - Kat with Carey and Karen over the shoulder shot - I've still got it. There is one more TT to throw down next week - same time 6:30 first rider off and same place - intersection of 27th St. and Union Road in CF. Come on out and join in - go for the "marked" man! Someone has got to stop him!
